Beat the Heat: Perfect summer serves with Double Dutch
16 August 2024
Things are hotting up this summer – but Double Dutch bring the answer with their perfect summer serves!
We caught up with founder Raissa de Haas to talk all things Double Dutch, and get their take on the best cocktail recipes for the summer.
Tell us the story behind Double Dutch.
My twin sister Joyce and I were born and raised in the Netherlands, where we developed a passion for quality beverages through our parents who were mixing drinks. After moving to the UK for our university, we noticed a gap in the market for premium mixers. Most mixers were either too sweet or lacked the complexity to complement high-quality spirits nor was there any flavour innovation in the mixer market (in comparison to gins who were massively booming). This inspired us to start Double Dutch, dedicated to crafting versatile, all-natural mixers with unique flavour combinations that were low in calories and good for the planet - but quick to get the party started. We launched in 2015, and since then, we’ve been on a mission to revolutionise the mixer market.
What sets Double Dutch apart from other mixers?
From the very beginning, we’ve made waves with our unique dual-flavoured mixers, setting us apart in the market. As a female-founded company, we bring a fresh perspective to the industry, and we're proud to be the only B Corp certified mixer brand committed to doing business the right way. Our vibrant and visually distinctive brand world reflects our ethos of being refreshing, bold, and innovative.
We continuously push the boundaries by launching innovative products and exploring new flavour combinations. Beyond our products, we support and champion industry initiatives that create positive change, such as our Female Bartender Scholarship program.
Double Dutch has a varied collection of mixers - what inspires your choice of flavours?
Customer feedback plays a big role, we listen to what our customers enjoy and what they’re looking for in a mixer. This direct helps us tailor our offerings to meet their preferences and expectations – such as our pink grapefruit and double lemon were developed after an increase in demand. We also look at wider consumer trends and the popularity of different ingredients in the culinary world. For example, the rise of interest in healthier, the association of cucumber and gin, and more natural flavours initially led us to explore options like cucumber and watermelon, which is super refreshing and on-trend.
We also travel a lot and draw inspiration from various global cuisines and culinary traditions. Ultimately, our goal is to craft mixers that are versatile, innovative, and resonate with a wide audience, enhancing their drinking experience in new and exciting ways.
Are there any new flavours you'd love to create?
Absolutely! We’re always experimenting with new flavours and have a few exciting ones in the pipeline. Some flavour profiles I love are more exotic fruits like dragon fruit, tropical flavours like pineapple/mango/passionfruit as well as aromatic herbs and the potential of savoury mixers.
What is your perfect summer drink?
My perfect summer drink has to be either a Paloma (Tequila with our Pink grapefruit soda) or a spirit mixer served with our Cucumber & Watermelon. It’s light, crisp, and incredibly refreshing on a hot day. I love to pair it with a quality gin, a squeeze of lime, and a few fresh mint leaves mixer (or even with a coconut rum or white rum – both very different but delicious).
