PoB Recommends: The most exciting coronation celebrations around the country
28 April 2023
On Saturday 6th May, eight months on from the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we are set for a majestic weekend of coronation events to celebrate the crowning of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey.
The Coronation programme will include the procession and service on 6th May, the ‘Coronation Big Lunch’ across the country followed by a concert in Windsor on 7th May, and ‘The Big Help Out’ community activity on the bank holiday, Monday 8th May. For those looking for something a little different, we have scoured the nation to find the most exciting coronation celebrations to look out for over the bank holiday weekend.
Setting Sail
Those looking to follow in the footsteps of King Charles III himself are invited to raise a glass in the Royal Deck Tea Room of The Royal Yacht Britannia, where King Charles enjoyed annual summer holidays as a young royal. Now docked in Edinburgh, The Tea Room aboard the Royal Yacht will be serving a coronation special featuring coronation chicken sandwiches and Gusbourne English sparkling wine.
To sample the royal yachting life a stay onboard The Royal Yacht’s sister ship Fingal is a must. Guests staying aboard this coronation weekend will enjoy a private tour of Britannia as well as a bottle of Moët to raise a toast to the crowning of the new King.
Highland Flings
A true royal celebration would not be complete without a visit to Balmoral and down the road in Braemar the team at The Fife Arms are ensuring that the occasion is well marked hosting a very special Afternoon Tea and Royal whisky tasting featuring a flight of King Charles’ favourite drams. You can even take home on a handcrafted item specially designed for the occasion such as The Fife Arms needle-felted red squirrel.
A little further north the city of Aberdeen is hosting a family friendly day out with enough activities to keep any young reveler entertained including zorbs, segways, an agility course and even a climbing wall! Entertainment will be provided with live performances by Iron Broo, The Grampian District Pipes and Drums, and The Rock Choir.
Back in Edinburgh the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is hosting a special Coronation Ball in honour of King Charles in Edinburgh’s historic Greyfriars Kirk with entertainment provided by James Coutts, joining Scottish country dancers from around the world.
Very Royal Residences
For those based further south you’ll find another Coronation Ball in York, this time in the city’s Grand Assembly Rooms, dating all the way back to 1730. Not to be outdone by the Scots, guests here will be treated to a three course meal and entertainment by a 20-piece big band. Looking for a place to stay to rest those weary dancing feet? Middlethorpe Hall and Spa provides the perfect respite where guests can unwind in the spa tucked away in two lovingly converted Edwardian cottages surrounded by a walled garden.
Back in the capital crowds are expected to line the streets for The Coronation Procession to glimpse a sight of the newly-crowned King and members of the Royal Family, however those looking for a procession of a different kind can venture west towards Henley, where the Thames will be hosting a flotilla, complete with boats dressed for the occasion. Those looking for an optimum spot should head to The Relais Henley where guests can enjoy the celebrations with a two hour river cruise and champagne picnic and even see the bedroom where King Charles I used to stay!
From Charles I to Henry VIII - Hever Castle, home to Henry’s second wife, Anne Boleyn, is planning a crafty day fit for your own princes and princesses complete with crown and shield decorating, face painting and a very special exhibition detailing the lives of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn.
Coastal Celebrations
Down in Cornwall, young party goers are also well catered for as The Eden Project are opening their doors to allow all visitors under 25 to explore the world-famous biomes free of charge! King Charles’ fondness for gardening and nature will be celebrated here with a vibrant weekend of music, food and talks from the likes of paralympian Ade Adepitan, which will even be broadcast live for those who can’t make it down.
Not to be outdone, nearby The Nare hotel in Truro is planning a full weekend of celebrations to mark the occasion including a traditional coronation dinner, a Cornish cream tea garden party overlooking Carne Beach and a community spirited lunch to ensure nobody is left out on this very special weekend.
So there you have it, from coronation chicken sandwiches to classic Coronation Balls there is something for everyone this coronation weekend and from all the team at PoB Hotels we wish King Charles III the very best for this long-awaited weekend.
