A Conversation with Lorraine Jarvie: History, Heritage & the Magic of Bath
6 March 2025
Let yourself be swept up by the charm of Bath. With its Georgian architecture and cobbled streets, step back in time in this fairy tale city.
And where better to base yourself than in one of Bath's most historic landmarks, The Royal Crescent? To uncover more about the wonder of Bath, we spoke with Lorraine Jarvie, General Manager of The Royal Crescent Hotel. Join us as we learn about everything from the inspirational historical figures to hidden gems in the local area.
Bath is a city rich in history and charm — what’s your favourite historical fact or hidden story about The Royal Crescent?
In the spirit of International Women’s Day - Elizabeth Montagu, the 18th Century social reformer, literary critic, art patron, and writer was a resident of 16 Royal Crescent (currently our hotel). It was while resident here that she started the Blue Stocking Society, a place where women only could gather to discuss art, literature, and politics, which was previously quite unheard of in the day. She was also a notable social reformer and a campaigner for education for women. Our Montagu Mews Restaurant is a tribute to Elizabeth and her pioneering work.
This year marks a special anniversary for Jane Austen - how does Bath celebrate its most famous literary resident, and are there any exciting plans at the hotel?
Bath holds the largest and longest festival celebrating Jane Austen. It runs from 12th - 21st September, but as this year is the 250 anniversary, there are events going on all year round. To mark the start of Jane Austen Week, there is a fabulous Promenade from the Royal Crescent with over 1000 fans dressed in period costume. Throughout the week, there are costume balls, guided tours, theatre and talks. At The Royal Crescent Hotel, we have a Jane Austen Package which includes a themed Afternoon Tea and a guided tour of the city . For the more daring, we have a Jane Austen Murder Mystery Dinner - or try something a little different with our lessons in Regency Dancing!
If you could time travel back to Georgian Bath for a day, what would you love to experience first-hand?
I would love to dress in silks and be carried by sedan chair to the Assembly Rooms to hear the latest music recital.
Bath is one of the UK’s most iconic destinations, but do you have any lesser-known spots or experiences in the city that visitors shouldn’t miss?
Alexandra Park to the south , sits on a hill and offers magnificent views over the city, but if a steep climb is not for you, a stroll through Sydney Gardens and onto the Kennet & Avon Canal is just as idyllic. Stop in at the Holburne Museum Café en route to enjoy a refreshment in their lovely garden.
When you’re not welcoming guests at The Royal Crescent, where’s your favourite place in the UK for a little escape?
I really enjoy going to The Gower in South West Wales. It has the most spectacular coastline and beaches, not to mention some great restaurants with local produce - and is always so much quieter than the south of England.
Finally, if you had to describe The Royal Crescent experience in just three words, what would they be?
An iconic, timeless and tranquil experience.
