Designing Innovation with Geraldine Milsom: Inside Talbooth House & Spa
7 March 2025
Nestled in a quiet corner of Dedham Vale in Essex, Talbooth House & Spa's interiors sure pack a punch.
With unique art lining the walls, bold fabrics and sumptuous furniture, this is a place to relax and indulge - lovingly created by owner Geraldine Milsom. We caught up with Geraldine to find out more about her interior inspiration.
Your interiors at Talbooth House are stunning! If you could sum up your design in three words, what would they be?
Bold, minimalistic, and innovative.
You’ve created such beautiful spaces – where do you find your inspiration? Any unexpected places or past travels that have influenced your design choices?
Inspiration for my designs springs from all around me. I don’t actively seek it out, instead I stay attuned to my environment. For instance, last year I began one project with stunning two-metre high Pride and Prejudice wallpaper, while another was sparked by a striking piece of artwork, featuring a female astronaut wearing a pink fluorescent helmet, powder coated on to a metal canvas.
If you could magically transport Talbooth House to any other part of the UK for a week-long retreat, where would it be and why?
If I could magically transport Talbooth House to anywhere for a week long retreat, it would be London - specifically the north side of Hyde Park. That would be my ideal week! My family, along with my dogs, would relish the luxury of our own 12-bedroom hotel, complete with a spa, swimming pool and tennis court. Evenings would be for venturing out to explore the city’s incredible restaurants, catching shows in a few of the wonderful theatres, and enjoying the vibrant art scene.
We all have that one decorative piece or detail that brings a space to life – what’s your favourite item or feature at Talbooth House?
I have two: my astronaut, and a huge scaled-up screen print on acrylic, of a rusted steelboat which Jack my son produced.
What’s your idea of a perfect holiday in the UK? Any must-visit spots?
My perfect holiday in the UK would be Cornwall, where the sea surf, sand, and - believe it or not - sunshine come together to make it the most unforgettable place. To be honest, even when the wind is howling and the waves are wild it’s still an amazing place.
