Worlds Collide: Exploring Inverness with Ness Walk’s Head Concierge, Steve Hales
2 September 2024
Inverness has so much to offer! From quaint Scottish villages just outside the main city, to picturesque countryside landscapes, it can be difficult to know where to start.
To help make the most of your break in Inverness, we caught up with Head Concierge at Ness Walk, Steve Hales. He shared with us the joys of his job, his favourite pastimes and his love for the Scottish highlands. With his knowledge, you can curate your own unforgettable break and ensuring you enjoy Inverness to its fullest.
What do you love most about Ness Walk?
Ness Walk has a real beating heart; there is something incredibly special about the camaraderie and culture that envelops each guest as they walk through the front doors. We are able to really get to know our guests and understand their interests and passions which allows us to connect them with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. There is no better feeling than knowing you have made a stay truly special and the feedback and number of guests who keep in touch after departure is a testament to that - one couple we welcomed last week left so happy they invited me to visit them in Paris!
The Highlands change so much throughout the seasons - when is the best time of year to visit Ness Walk?
Autumn stands out as my favourite time to visit the Scottish Highlands and Ness Walk in particular. The setting on the riverside goes through such a beautiful transformation with leaves turning to gold and auburn. After a busy summer season, the city adapts to a slightly slower pace at this time of year and you can often be surprised by lovely weather. Heading out for an autumn walk wrapped up in a cosy scarf and gloves and taking in the beautiful landscapes is really lovely! And returning to a crackling fire and a hot chocolate or a lovely glass of red wine is all the more appealing!
Your role involves assisting guests to make their stay as memorable as possible – are there any particularly unique or interesting requests you have helped with?
The smallest requests and the grandest gestures both really matter to us we’re always thinking about how we can go above and beyond. As a team we’ve surprised car enthusiasts with refreshments in viewpoints on the NorthCoast500 and arranged elaborate surprise proposals! One request that stands out was from a couple from Miami who requested to go on a luxury cruise down Loch Ness on their special anniversary. To give them the full experience, a chauffeur transfer was arranged taking them from the hotel to the tranquil south side of the Loch where a private yacht awaited. As they sailed down Loch Ness, we served up a seafood platter, hamper picnic and champagne, before they disembarked at the iconic Urquhart Castle for a private tour. Blue skies opened up for the return journey, which I’d love to take credit for too! They were absolutely blown away by the experience and I still keep in touch with them to this day.
What are your three favourite things to do in the Scottish Highlands?
1. Loch Ness is iconic and captivating and I love to visit the lesser-explored south side. Dores Beach is my favourite spot as from this vantage point, you can really take in the vastness and majesty of the loch. The stillness and tranquility of this location stops you in your tracks and there are some beautiful walks which hug the side of the loch and venture into the woodlands brimming with wildlife. If you feel brave, you can go for a swim, or a ‘dook’ as the Highlanders call it, as the water is crystal clear.
2. Venture into the city – Inverness has really stepped up a level in recent years with some incredible independent food and drink experiences and a vibrant culture. Fine dining, whisky snugs, seafood restaurants, wine bars and even a distillery in the city centre – there is something for everyone. There are also fantastic bars hosting local trad musicians where you can soak up the atmosphere.
3. Just outside of Inverness, there are a number of small towns that offer a great day trip and come highly recommended. Dornoch is one of my favourites – a quaint former royal burgh with sprawling sandy beaches and a charming town centre bursting with independent shops, cafés and boutiques. The town is a golfing mecca thanks to the exceptional Royal Dornoch Golf Links and the nearby Dunrobin Castle is breathtaking – the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and home to stunning gardens and falconry displays.
Are there any exciting events being held at Ness Walk or in Inverness coming up?
We’re particularly looking forward to the festive season at Ness Walk as we love decorating the hotel richly and putting on a calendar of events. At this time of year, the atmosphere comes alive with twinkling fairylights, roaring log fires and the smell of fresh baking drifting through the lounge. The highlight is always our Highland Hogmanay which is a showcase of culture and culinary flair – we’ve lined up a showstopping menu and fabulous entertainment for this year’s celebrations.
In the coming months, Inverness is also looking forward to hosting the very first Loch and Land Festival in October. To showcase the incredible array of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed year round, the ten-day festival includes woodland archery, white water sledging, Highland coo and castle tours, and wellness activities including yoga and pilates!
