A Wild Life with Lucy Dunn, Education Officer on the Armathwaite Hall Estate
23 April 2024
The Lake District is known for its abundant nature and wildlife, and nowhere more so than at The Lake District Wildlife Park, which sits on the Armathwaite Hall Estate.
We spoke to Education Officer Lucy Dunn about nature and wildlife in this stunning landscape.
The Lake District is a wonderful place for guests to reconnect with nature – what would you recommend for those looking to learn more about this UNESCO World Heritage landscape?
To reconnect with nature the ideal thing to do is turn your phone off and take a walk. Use all your senses to listen to the birds, look out for wildlife and smell the wild-flowers. You can do a self-guided walk or book on a guided walk with me where you can learn all about nature and the Lake District mountains. I was born and bred in the Lake District and have spent all my life exploring the wonders it has to offer.
What makes The Lake District Wildlife Park unique?
The Lake District Wildlife Park is unique as it set on the Armathwaite Hall Estate which comprises Hay Meadows, Woodland, Riverbank and Lake Shore. It is a haven for native wildlife. The Wildlife Park is set against a backdrop of the Lake District mountains and has a natural feel to it. It has an amazing array of exotic breeds and native rare breeds that you can get close to, which makes it a special place.
What are the most special guest experiences at the Wildlife Park?
There are too many amazing experiences to mention, but being able to watch Birds of Prey fly freely overhead and land next to you is very special. Hand feeding the animals is a fabulous way to connect with a donkey or an alpaca. The most memorable thing to do is to book on an Animal Experience where you can be close and connect to Tapirs, Lemurs and Meerkats. A truly memorable experience that will stay with you forever.
Where is your favourite place on the Armathwaite Hall Estate?
Walking to the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake where you can hear birds singing, watch deer grazing and see tracks and signs of wildlife. It is peaceful and relaxing and you can truly immerse yourself in nature. Take a journal or a notebook and you can write and doodle while you take a break from modern life.
What are 3 things a guest must do while staying at Armathwaite Hall?
- Visit the Lake District Wildlife Park of course!
- Book on a guided walk or do a self-led walk on the local fells or around the Estate.
- Treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment
