The Cotswolds

An Inspiring Sporting Odyssey: Victoria Pendleton’s Passionate Journey Through Britain’s Favourite Sports

7 nights - 135 miles

Follow the sporty sojourn taken by Olympic cyclist and trained jockey Victoria Pendleton as she tries a different activity each day in the Cotswolds and the Chilterns. Inspired by the region’s rolling hills, quiet country lanes and pretty villages, this exclusive escape lets you balance the activity with delectable dining in PoB Hotels’ fantastic restaurants before drifting into a relaxing sleep in elegant bedrooms.

About the break

Start your activity break from the pretty Cotswold town of Painswick, near ideal mountain-bike country in the area around the scenic Five Valleys. You need to have good basic cycling skills to head into the hills, but you have the option of an electric mountain bike if you want to go easy on yourself; there will also be plenty of stops for photos.

The Painswick is your base for this excursion, which leaves from the hotel door. Back at base, 17 stylish rooms await as well as a well-earned meal in the restaurant.

Now head to Tetbury, where a session in Calcot & Spa’s new high-tech gym The Grain Store on its 220-acre rewilded country estate is just the ticket to keep those muscles working. It’s full of modern equipment to make your workout both more interesting and productive. Try pushing and pulling a weighted sled, the latest celeb workout (Kate Beckinsale and Kate Hudson are fans).

As the name suggests, Calcot & Spa is also a place to relax, with a 16-metre indoor pool and an outdoor hot tub with fireplace, as well as an acclaimed restaurant and country-chic rooms.

Journey south to the Southern Cotswolds not far from Bath. You’re here for the riding – Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa in Wiltshire comes with a stable of 25 horses suitable for everyone from a three-year old to a jockey-in-waiting. When you’ve found your perfect mount, take them for a hack around some of the hotel’s 500-acre grounds, enjoying the scenery as you go.

You’ll be staying overnight at Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa, a Palladian pile with an array of activities onsite, as well as a gorgeous spa, 42 antique-filled bedrooms and Michelin-starred fare in the restaurant.

It’s only a short hop to Bath, beloved by everyone from the Romans to Bridgerton fans. You’ll feel like a Jane Austen character yourself staying in the series of terraced houses comprising The Royal Crescent Hotel. Although it’s in the heart of Bath, it’s just a short walk from the base on the River Avon, where you can see this beautiful city as you paddle along the water, gliding beneath bridges as you go.

Your accommodation at The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa has a home-from-home feel as well as a spoiling spa and contemporary dining in Montagu’s Mews restaurant, with its windows overlooking the gardens.

Say farewell to the Cotswolds and set your course for Henley-on-Thames, home of the famous regatta. There’s no better place to try your hand at rowing, especially as you’ll have ex-Olympian Toby Garbett guiding your strokes as you make your way along the river. He can guide you round the world-famous Leander Club too.

You couldn’t stay in a more appropriate hotel than the Relais Henley, a former 16th-century coaching inn that’s right on The Thames. Riverside rooms come with blue carpets that evoke the water, and a boat is suspended from the ceiling of the Clipper Restaurant.

It’s a fitting place for a last supper at the end of your sport-filled trip. As Victoria Pendleton says, “It doesn’t feel like exercise to do a different activity every day. It’s a wonderful experience to do something different somewhere new, and to be outside and enjoy the environment.”
