A Blooming Good Break: Flowers, Fashion & A Forecast Worth Escaping For
6 nights - 131 miles
The forecast’s looking optimistic, the gardens are showing off, linen’s back in, and suddenly nobody’s in much of a hurry to head home. Think spa afternoons, country house stays and long lunches that drift happily into dinner.
About the break
A great escape is rarely just about where you stay, but the rhythm shared between people and places: the slow exhale of a morning in the spa, a perfectly timed retail detour, and the quiet pleasure of arriving somewhere new as the light softens. This is a journey through considered indulgence and changing scenery, where each stay may just accidentally tempt you to linger a little longer than planned.
Just beyond the city, Sopwell House is the kind of place where the pace shifts the moment you arrive. Set within 12 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, this Georgian house is wrapped in lawns and quiet gardens that make doing absolutely nothing feel widely productive.
At its heart is the award-winning Cottonmill Spa, drawing on wellness rituals from around the world: all steam, stillness and gloriously unhurried hours. When the pace naturally picks up, evenings drift to Omboo, where bold interiors and a lively hum set the tone. Spa, supper and good company; a perfectly balanced escape, well fed, well rested, and quietly primed for the warmer months ahead.
The next pause belongs to Hartwell House & Spa; set within an elegant sweep of Buckinghamshire parkland, in one of England’s newest Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A National Trust hotel with real presence, it blends Jacobean and Georgian architecture into something formally dressed, but quietly mischievous underneath.
A short drive from here brings you to Bicester Village, where the afternoon slips easily into browsing between some of the world’s most desirable names — the kind of place where one thing quickly becomes another, and wardrobes start to take shape almost by accident. Browsing turns into lunch plans, which, if you fancy, roll naturally into a few drinks later on. When you’re ready to head back to Hartwell, if the legs and the mood allow, there’s always a game of tennis waiting.
From Hartwell House, drift gently towards the Cotswolds, because no journey feels complete without absorbing the unhurried way of life the locals seem to have mastered.En route to your next stay, pause in Bibury; a postcard village of honey-stone cottages, winding lanes and the gentle drift of the River Coln. It’s made for slow wandering and an excellent excuse for a coffee stop, where fresh pastries, proper coffee and birdsong do most of the talking.
Once you’re ready to put your feet up, continue on to Whatley Manor Hotel & Spa for the night; a polished slice of English country design. This grown-up escape pairs refined architecture with an easy, unforced calm, set within sculpted gardens and open countryside. There’s time to drift between its 22 individual garden rooms, pause at the Bird Hide, or claim a quiet spot along the riverbank.
The following morning, continue a little further north to Cheltenham. First established as a spa town after the discovery of its mineral springs in 1716, it went on to become what is widely regarded as the most complete Regency town in Britain (a claim we’re inclined to agree with). Wander the Promenade, dip into The Wilson Art Gallery and Museum, or simply let instinct take the lead as you explore the town at its most polished in the warmer months; following the day wherever it happens to go.
With one final stop on the journey, though never quite the last in feeling, just a ten-minute drive away is Ellenborough Park. Steeped in history, its story begins in 1485, when a tenant farmer set out to build his home, creating the Great Hall that still sits at the heart of the hotel today.
Once you’ve settled in, the afternoon opens up nicely: a traditional afternoon tea, or time spent in the spa. While away an hour, or the rest of the day between the heated outdoor pool, Jacuzzi and juice bar, with everything on hand for a properly indulgent pause before the journey home begins.
