Discovering Hidden Gems: Strolling in The New Forest with Andrew Berridge, General Manager at The Montagu Arms
14 January 2025
The New Forest is an enchanting destination straight out of a fairy tale.
With a mosaic of plants, fungi and towering trees, is there a better place for your next British staycation? The Montagu Arms is situated in the heart of this beautiful tapestry. Here, the team always greets you with open arms and strives to elevate your New Forest experience. To find out more, we spoke to General Manager, Andrew Berridge.
How did you become general manager at The Montagu Arms?
I started my career in hospitality at the age of just 17 in a John Lewis Hotel. For the next 11 years, I worked in food and beverage, running restaurants and country inns, before I became an Operations Manager, and later, a Deputy Manager.
Long before I became General Manager, The Montagu Arms had been on my radar. I remember discovering it 10 years previously whilst driving around the New Forest and fell completely in love with it. I knew the Managing Director, James Hiley-Jones, as well. He was such a genuine and kind man and I was desperate to work alongside him. When the opportunity to do just that arose in 2022, I was delighted to join the team!
How do you make a stay at The Montagu Arms a luxurious experience for guests?
For me, The Montagu Arms is quaint, blissful and intimate. This emerges from our values, which we weave into everything we do. We strive to be authentic, curious, playful, empathetic and give guests an unwavering sense of belonging. Luxury comes from taking a genuine interest in our guests and creating tailored experiences for each occasion. Something that is very special to me is our small complimentary touches. With seasonal treats, ongoing access to our pick-and-mix, colouring supplies and much more, The Montagu Arms provides an unforgettable stay.
Our extensive food and beverage offering provides great choice with everything from small nibble dishes to fantastic sharers for partners and friends to enjoy together. Paired with our exceptional wines list, these mouth-watering flavours are elevated to provide pure indulgence.
It would be amiss not to mention the beautiful surroundings that envelop our hotel. We are so lucky to have the picturesque New Forest on our doorstep. Whether you are here to spend time with the family, connect with a loved one or to be adventurous with your furry friend, we are always here to offer advice and provide the ideal escape.
Do you have any exciting plans in the pipeline for the hotel?
What would be your 3 top tips for guests staying at The Montagu Arms?
There are so many delightful things to do that it is difficult to narrow the options down to just three! I personally love walking in the New Forest and soaking up the stunning surroundings. Visting local towns and villages is also a must! With plenty of locally run shops and cafes, each destination is a treasure trove of surprises. From Lymington, Lydhurst, Exbury, Burely, Milford on Sea, and of course Beaulieu, the options are endless! The Beaulieu Estate and Motor Museum is always an incredible day out, especially if they are running an event. I always recommend it and guests return filled with memories and praise!
What is your favourite thing to do in the New Forest?
Family is a central part of my life and there is nothing better than exploring everything the New Forest has to offer with them. Despite living here for several years now, there always seems to be something new to discover. However, we have firm favourites as well and we love walking around King’s Hat, Pigs Bush and Culverley. We are perfectly happy to spend hours walking the uninterrupted perfection of the land and watching all the amazing wildlife roam freely. Whatever the weather, no walk is complete without an ice cream and a cup of tea from one of the many local businesses. There are so many independent producers you just have to try!
