The hotel hosted King George III in 1788 when he visited during his long stay in Cheltenham, on advice of his physicians, to take the newly found spa waters. Ellenborough Park also hosted Queen of England Katherine Parr on many occasions, as she only lived down the road at Sudeley Castle, and there is still a portrait of her hanging in the grand Great Hall.
